♠YouTube gunman kills eight at school

The gunman who went on a deadly shooting spree at a Finnish high school overnight posted a video clip on the video-sharing site YouTube that signalled his intentions.

The video, entitled “Jokela High School Massacre – 11/7/2007,” was posted within the past two weeks under the pseudonym “Sturmgeist89”, who identified himself as Pekka-Eric Auvinen, 18.

Police confirmed Auvinen as the gunman who shot dead five boys, two girls and the headmistress of Jokela high school, 50 kilometres north of Helsinki.

Police say Auvinen shot himself in the head after the rampage but still managed to shoot at police before they closed in and took him to hospital.

This morning hospital sources said he had since died of his wounds.

The video, which YouTube withdrew following the shooting, shows the Jokela school, then pans to show a young man aiming his weapon at the camera. The scenes are set to loud hard rock music.

In his profile posted alongside his YouTube videos, the teen describes himself as an “cynical existentialist, antihuman humanist.”

“I am prepared to fight and die for my cause. I, as a natural selector, will eliminate all who I see unfit, disgraces of the human race and failures of natural selection,” he wrote.

The weapon, which he shows off on YouTube, is the same type of firearm used by the high school killer.

In another video, he sports a tee-shirt with the text “Humanity is Overrated.”

In several videos posted on YouTube by “Sturmgeist89,” which were withdrawn, the young man pays tribute to Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, who killed 12 schoolmates at Columbine High School in the United States in a 1999 shooting spree.

He also pays tribute to Theodore John Kaczynski, known as the Unabomber, and posted video clips about Timothy McVeigh, who blew up a truck of chemicals at the foot of an Oklahoma City building in 1995, killing 168 people.

“I don’t want to be part of this … society,” he wrote, criticising “corrupted governments” and the “rule of idiocracy (sic).”

“I am ready to die for a cause I know is right, just and true … I will rather fight and die than live a long and unhappy life.”

Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen has described the massacre as an “awful day” that deeply undermines the sense of security in his country.

Finland has one of the world’s highest gun ownership rates, ranking third behind the United States and Yemen. Auvinen was a licensed gun owner and sporting shooter.

The posting on YouTube of a clip announcing a school shooting in Finland before it happened shows how self-shot videos have become the favoured means for modern killers wanting to get their message across.

The nature of 24-hour media means such videos are also likely to get worldwide attention very quickly in a way which letters never could.

Seven children and the school principal were killed overnight when a fellow pupil opened fire at a school in southern Finland, hours after a clip posted on video-sharing website YouTube predicted a massacre there.

The YouTube video, set to a hard-driving song called Stray Bullet, shows a still photo of a low building that appears to be the Jokela high school.

The photo breaks apart to reveal a red-tinted picture of a man pointing a handgun at the camera.

“Go back 50 years or 25 years, they wrote letters and now they’ve moved onto YouTube,” Mike Berry, a professor in criminal psychology, told Reuters.

“He’s just using today’s modern facilities. Young people use YouTube instead of a pen and paper.

“I don’t think this will produce copycat situations but what I do think is that people who want to make a message will see this as a new avenue.”

The YouTube video, entitled “Jokela High School Massacre – 11/7/2007”, was posted by a user called Sturmgeist89.

“I am prepared to fight and die for my cause,” read a posting by a user of the same name.

“I, as a natural selector, will eliminate all who I see unfit, disgraces of human race and failures of natural selection.”

“Sturmgeist” means storm spirit in German.

The user’s account has since been suspended.
